Memorial Day is the day that we honor all the servicemen who died while trying to protect this country. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. It should be a day when our entire country just meditates over all the dead and all the wars that we had in order to remain free from oppression. It should be a solemn day, when we visit cemeteries and honor the war dead, but has morphed into just a day off when many go shopping and grilling and celebrate “the day off”. I don’t believe that was the intention of Memorial Day however, everything in the US is about business, and this is the business of Memorial Day! May those who gave their lives for our freedom be memorialized and rest in peace.
